500 Years of Christianity in the Philippines

After half a millennium, the impact and significance of Christianity in the Philippines and in the surrounding regions of the Pacific, Southeast Asia and East Asia endure. When Spain eventually established its presence in the late 16^th century in the archipelago that would later become the Philippines, the Catholic Church’s reach extended throughout the world for the first time in history. The arrival of Christianity was accompanied by Spanish aims of imperial expansion, and indigenous populations met the political and cultural challenges with the assimilation and appropriation of Christian tenets and practices, as well as outright resistances. The negotiation and contestation with various facets of Spanish colonialism have come to define, in large part, the process of Filipino historical becoming.

Submissions

Papers must not have been published, submitted for publication, presented at another conference, or submitted for presentation at another conference. Panels must have panel abstracts as well as an abstract for each paper in the panel.  Abstract proposals (250 – 300 words) should be submitted in doc format to: philstudiesassociation@gmail.com, cc: Clement C. Camposano (cccamposano@up.edu.ph) and Elizabeth L. Enriquez (elenriquez@up.edu.ph). Proponents must indicate their institutional affiliation.

Registration

The registration fee will cover the following:

1. access to virtual sessions, including opening and closing ceremonies;
2. access to online special events such as Ma-Aram (Vanishing Traditions) documentaries produced by PSA;
3. digital book of abstracts/program, which includes a directory of conference participants;
4. digital certificate of attendance;
5. post-conference access to recordings of sessions, with permission from presenters; and
6. subject to a review process, participants’ papers will be considered for publication in Filipinas: Journal of the Philippine Studies Association, with permission from author.

The registration fee also makes possible the holding of virtual sessions with the required technology and technicians to assist on the back end. On the other hand, participants will not have to bear the cost of travel and accommodation.
